-Is Guthrie's message individualist or collectivist? Explain.
It is an individual message because he constantly says "you and me"- not "us."
-Do you find this song to be pro-government or anti-government?
I think it is anti-government because he is always saying that no one can stop me.

The Egg questions
1. The man was a happy, outspoken, hard-working man before he got married. After marriage he became quiet and unenthusiastic.
2. The narrator views chickens in a bad way and they have nothing good about them. He associates them with disappointment.
3. The narrator says he had trouble as a kid because the parents were constantly trying to find success and they couldn't.
4. It could be a symbol for the father because he wants to entertain people with the egg but it is not working and won't ever work so he is "stuck" in the jar.
5. It means that the parents finally realized that they could not be successful. It means that there will always be lower class because chickens will always lay eggs.

American Friends
-What could be some reasons Americans are perceived in this way/
There are many reasons why people could perceive this as true, In the article, the author states, "Americans use the word 'friend' to mean anyone I have spoken to a few times." I would agree with this because sometimes I catch myself saying, "Oh my friend.." when I have actually met/talked to him or her once or twice. This doesn't mean that friendships in American are wrong or fake, it just means that we a different culture involved with friendships. People don't have any right to judge other people from different parts of the world because they don't know about their culture.

collectivist vs. individualist
-In a collectivist culture, what personality traits are likely to be considered ideal? what about in an individualist culture?
As an individual it is just you, only your personal responsibilities are what you worry about. A collectivist is to be loyal to the group that belong to and do things to better the welfare of the group-not just them.
-The scenario question:
I think that this is a collectivist society because no one will challenge the important people or people with authority; in fact, they are scared to even question them.
-Create a specific problem.
A teach might have problems encouraging kids to do well in his/her class. An individualist teacher would might offer some type of reward for the best of some assignment, but in a collectivist society would offer a reward to the entire class if the entire group achieved something.
-What is an acquaintance? Does the word have a positive or negative connotation? Explain.
An acquaintance is someone whom you are familiar with but not very close too. I think it has a negative connotation because saying someone is your acquaintance is saying you know him or her but they aren't your friend and that sounds bad.

1984- Journal Entry #2
I believe that Winston is having a hard time buying into what Big Brother and the State are selling because of Julia. Julia is the one person Winston has feelings for that he can not understand. This confusions leads to his uncertainty of Big Brother and the party. I do not think Winston's thinking and questioning the government aren't any form of protest. He knows that he shouldn't be questioning Big Brother like he does but he doesn't understand why he it is bad and I think that in order to protest you should fully understand the cause you are supporting or defying. These acts of rebellion Winston portrays are both similar and different to the rebelliousness that is occurring now in this country. They are the same in the fact that the government is turning a blind eye to the protesters on wall street just the party did in 1984. The are different because in 1984 the party makes sure that when they turn a blind eye, the rest of the people turn one too, but today people all over the country are hearing about the Tea Party Movement and Occupy Wall Street even if they aren't participating and/or supporting it.

"2+2=5" Radiohead
-What is the song talking about lyrically?
The song is talking about how a government is altering people's lives without them knowing. When they finally realize this, it is too late to fix because no one was paying attention.
-How does the music mimic or help push the message?
The music is quiet and calm at first but then it becomes very loud and harsh when the singer says "pay attention." This puts emphasis on the stupidity of the people who didn't pay attention to the government.
-The title is an allusion to 1984. Explain the connection.
It alludes to 1984 because in the book, Winston directly says that in the book. He is talking about how persuasive the government is and if they were to tell people 2+2=5, people would believe it.

Globalization
-The conflict is external because it is what she feels, and its between her and the US.
-Globalization creates conflict because it is very "one-sided." The speaker means that globalization doesn't include everyone.
-The benefit related to globalization is according to the speaker, you can see what it is like to be a woman.
-The two values were the Qur'an and the constitution.

1984- Journal Entry #1
Winston Smith lives in a totalitarian society where "The Party" rules across Oceania. The Party has created equality throughout this country by psychologically altering the citizens' minds. They govern the people so precisely that they make sure there is no freedom at all. "Thinkcrime" (just thinking to yourself, writing in a journal, ect.) was even punishable by death. They have made it so there is no individuality; they restrict most freedoms, constantly blare propaganda throughout the country, and make it so no one has any more rights. They even alter history records to make sure the people believe in what the Party says is true, not what actually happened in history. They make relationships a shameful thing; in fact, the Party has to approve of a couples marriage and if any physical attraction is shown then the relationship is not granted. They also alter everyone's views on sex making it seem like a horrible thing and that sex is only needed for the reproduction of Party supporters. I wouldn't say it is forced happiness because other then Winston, no one knows they are being forced and restricted. The Party is mainly altering people's lives so that it seems like conformity.
The world Orwell creates in 1984 is a utopia according to definition because every one is happy and equal.

Utopia
-What is a "utopia"?
It means a perfect society or universe.
-What is your ideal world? Explain.
My ideal world would be close to what life is like today because there is a good balance between suffering and happiness. Most people would say a perfect world is a place where no one is mean or wrong, but for me that's far from it. Without pain and sadness no one would be able to feel what true happiness felt like. If no one were to be judged or we were all equal it would horrible because there would be individuality and I think that is very important in a world.
-What type of music would be the soundtrack to your utopia?
I don't really have a type because in my utopia everyone has freedom so that includes freedom to listen to whatever one pleases so I don't really have a specific type.

Chuck Baird
-Make a claim about the artist's voice & support with facts.
CL: The artist is deft.
-- First painting uses sign language.
-- Second painting has exaggerated tongue movements.
-- Third painting uses vibrant colors, meaning the focus is on the visual appearance just like deft people have to focus of the visual appearance of things.
-Identify a culture within these paintings.
The man is deft and not white.
-Write a claim you could make about this culture based on the paintings.
Deft people focus on vision like color and light in life more then anything.

You Were Right
-Make and inference of the song and explain it.
When he says "All that glitters isn't gold," he is talking about how everything isn't always what its seems (probably a relationship). This is proven throughout the song because the singer keeps talking about how things didn't work out.
-Write one analytical statement about the musical content of the song and explain it.
The tempo was faster then I thought it was going to be so it shows he isn't depressed about the end, he is just saying life will go one.
-Make one evaluative statement about the song's over all effectiveness and support it.
I thought that the song didn't effectively bring the main points across because the lyrics and instruments/tempo contrasted make me confused.

"Young Life" Bo Bartlett
-3 claims about this painting
1) The little boy in the painting is neglected.
-- The way Bartlett placed the boy with his back turned and a solemn expression on his face away from his very close parents symbolizes that they may not pay much attention to their child but more to each other.
2) The man likes to hunt.
-- The rifle in his hand, the dead deer on top of the truck, and the attire the man is wearing shows his love for hunting.
3) The man and woman are not married.
The woman is not wearing a wedding ring on her left hand.
Paragraph:
In Bo Bartlett's painting "Young Life," the small child in the painting is neglected. Bartlett's placement of the characters prove how the little boy is ignored by his parents. The way the boy is placed far away with his back turned shows that his relationship between him and his parents is distant. Also, the way the parents are draped over each other with out looking at the child might also suggest that they care more about each other rather than their own child. The young boy is clearly neglected in the painting "Young Life" by Bo Bartlett.

Dialect Movie
-In you opinion, what is voice in literature?
I think that voice is the way an author brings out his or her opinions in their writing.
-How does a person create his voice when writing? Is creating voice an intentional or unintentional act? Is it both? Explain.
In order to create voice, an author uses specific word choices, syntax, and their tone. Creating voice is defiantly intentional because author's want to bring points across that with out their voice, it wouldn't have much affect.
-Many people in Eastern Kentucky talk around a subject. According to the speaker, why do they do this? What can we learn about a writer from the way she approaches/handles a topic?
According to the speaker, we talk like this because of our culture and our culture creates a rhythm to our dialect. We can learn more about a writer by the rhythm of his/her writing.
-Whether it is fiction or non fiction, why is voice important in writing?
It is important because it gives the readers an idea of what the author is trying to say to them.
